HWI SWIMMERS AT THE HKASA DIVISION 1, DEC 2-3, 2017

Short Course Division 1 at Victoria Park Swimming Pool on December 2nd and 3rd, 2017
Twenty three of our age group swimmers entered this Division 1 meet that stretched over one and a half days. On Saturday afternoon Coach David Pool led five of our charges into the long distance events. All five swimmers that raced had strong swims. The girl’s 1500m freestyle was scheduled first. Junior Performance Squad swimmer Sophia Tang (14 yrs.) was the fastest of our three ladies and achieved an 8th place finish in 19:04.19 shaving half a minute from her previous short course personal best time despite having just overcome a leg injury. Her sister Katelyn Tang (13 yrs.) clocked a 20:48 whilst Kimberly Hobson (13 yrs.) impressed with a strong 19:57.12 taking on the 1500m freestyle the first time ever. Emily O’Dell (13 yrs.) in her first time ever 1500m freestyle clocked a 20:47.12. All three girls are part of our Junior Performance Squad. The boys 800m freestyle followed and was dominated by Gordon Mason (18 yrs.) who swam faster than Hong Kong record, storming to a personal best time of 8:06.86. Gordon also bettered his 400m freestyle personal best on the way to his victorious race claiming a gold Medal in the 18 yrs. and over age group. Julian Chow (14 yrs.) showed off his endurance in the 800m freestyle by improving by 8 seconds when coming home in 5th place in his age group in 8:58.39 breaking the 9 minutes the first time.

On Sunday the HWI contingent led by Coaches David Pool, Andrew Wright and Michael Fasching was back to race the whole day in a variety of events.

Our Medal winners on Sunday were:
Nathaniel Yeoh (14 yrs.) Age Performance Squad swimmer, taking home a Gold Medal in the 100m freestyle in 53.79, bettering his p.b. by 0.72.
Sarah Chu (12 yrs.) Junior Performance Squad athlete finished her 100m Freestyle in 1:00.60 to claim a Silver Medal. She shaved 1.72 seconds off her personal best despite choosing to not race in a tech suit.
Kylie Woo (16 yrs.) Youth Performance Squad swimmer was rewarded with a Silver medal in the 100 m Backstroke in 1:06.02.
Ella Fraser (15yrs.) Age Performance Squad swimmer picked up a Bronze Medal in the 200m breaststroke in 2:43.62.
Xiang Ma (19 yrs.) won a Bronze Medal in the 200m Breaststroke in 2:33.49, a Silver Medal in the 100m Backstroke in 1:00.86 and a Bronze Medal in the 400m IM in 4:36.86.

Besides our medal winners the following swimmers achieved a “Top 8” ranking in their age group:
Julian Chow (14 yrs.) in the 200m breaststroke 2:29.82 in 4th place and 400m IM in 4:57.76 in 6th place.
Summer Lam (12 yrs.) in the 100m freestyle 1:01.95 in 7th place.
Alvin Ip (16 yrs.) in the 200m breaststroke 2:29.60 = 8th place.
Ralph Lam (13 yrs.)200m breaststroke in 2:33.39 = 8th

The following HWI swimmers impressed by making huge strides taking significant margins off their personal best times and gaining experience in events that they never competed in before:

Olivia Du (13 yrs.), Lauren Floyd (11 yrs.) of our DBIS site coached by Marvin Johnson, Quisha Lee (12 yrs.), Eden Lim (10 yrs.), Eden Nguyen (13 yrs.), Emeric Payer (12 yrs.), Seychelle Rowe (13 yrs.) and Haley Chu (11 yrs.)

A Big Congratulations goes out to all our swimmers that were racing and improving on their previous performances but especially to those winning medals and achieved a ranking in the Top 8 of their age group!

We are now looking forward to hearing from our nine athletes that have travelled to Queensland to take on some of Australia’s finest age group swimmers.
